MACON -- Macon authorities say two Mercer University students have been charged with theft by taking and criminal damage to property involving a statue of a bear.
Authorities said 22-year-old Jordan Luke McMahan and 21-year-old Chris Anthony Santiago were arrested on Wednesday.
Police say an officer observed two people kicking the bear statue toward the campus on Saturday after the department received a report of possible theft of city property.
Jim Coleman, the Macon Arts Alliance's executive director, said the glass fiber bear statue will cost $3,500 to $4,000 to replace. It was part of the College Hill Corridor Bear Trail, funded by the Knight Neighborhood Challenge through the Community Foundation of Central Georgia.
