Three organizations honored with green awards

BUFORD -- During the third annual Sustainability Summit on Friday, Gwinnett County, Gwinnett Technical College and Corus360 were honored during the event's first-ever Gwinnett Sustainable Awards Luncheon.

The luncheon honored organizations and businesses for their environmentally friendly contributions.

Gwinnett County received the Green Community award for excellence in sustainability. The county has received bronze level certification through the Atlanta Regional Commission's Green Communities program.

Gwinnett Tech received the Green Reach award for making a significant impact in educating the business community. In order to expand its current course offerings and meet industry demands, the college is exploring creating a "Green Lab." The college also participates in the Governor's Energy Challenge, an initiative for state agencies to reduce energy consumption in facilities by 15 percent in 2020.

Corus360 received the Green Save award for executing sustainable business practices within their company. Their building boasts eco-friendly features such as occupancy-sensing compact fluorescent lighting, water-saving plumbing, additional windows for natural lighting, efficient AC units and a white roof that reflects rather than absorbs sun rays.

Jackson EMC and the Gwinnett Chamber economic development team sponsored the summit at the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center. This event, titled "Sustainability Stories: Case Studies that Make Cents," centered on educating business owners on cost-effective ways to go green.

"Harnessing renewable resources is a top priority to us," said Randy Dellinger, district manager for Gwinnett County at Jackson EMC. "We are proud to partner with Gwinnett Economic Development to educate businesses that it is possible to have an eco-friendly business that doesn't break the bank."

The annual Sustainability Summit is Gwinnett's premier environmental event targeting the state's leaders in sustainability, green building and innovations.
