Gwinnett Democrats are asking the county's new chairwoman to get started on ethics reform after her predecessor resigned from office to avoid indictment.
Steve Deak, chairman of the local Democratic Party, sent a letter to Chairwoman Charlotte Nash and other commissioners earlier this week asking for attention to the issue six months after a special grand jury report detailed questionable land purchase procedures and indicted a commissioner on bribery charges.
"In your campaign, you clearly stated that you believed that the loss of public trust was a fundamental issue facing Gwinnett County. Further, you proposed tougher ethics requirements and an overhaul of the land acquisition process," Deak wrote in the letter, which included questions about implementing the special grand jury's recommendations and new policies on land purchases.
"While you have found time to hold a public hearing about Briscoe Field and you have had time to inquire about improvements in pedestrian safety you have failed to discuss the most fundamental issue, the lack of leadership and vision by this Board and the unprecedented level of distrust from citizens this has created."
While Nash was elected in a nonpartisan special election in March, she has listed her party affiliation as Republican. There were no Democrats among the chairman candidates earlier this year.
New date for annual dinner
Meanwhile, the state party has rescheduled its annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner.
Mike Berlon, the local lawyer who heads the Democratic Party of Georgia, sent a letter to members that the plans for the May 21 dinner were changed after former President Jimmy Carter and others said they had conflicts.
The dinner will now be held Saturday, June 25. At that time, Congressman John Lewis will be presented the first annual John Lewis Congressional Medal of Freedom Award, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Riders, Berlon said in the letter.
