LAWRENCEVILLE — For comic book lovers, it’s like Christmas in May. For first-timers, it’s a cost-free introduction.
Saturday will mark the 10th edition of the annual “Free Comic Book Day,” and Gwinnett’s largest comic store will not disappoint.
Both locations of Galactic Quest, a presence in the community for the last 20 years, will host huge events and give away thousands of free comic books starting at 9 a.m.
“We definitely try to have a great, family-friendly atmosphere,” Galactic Quest owner Kyle Puttkammer said. “It’s very important for us to make everybody feel welcome. There’s this misconception that comic books in general are kind of a sub-culture, and we’ve very much gotten into the mainstream.”
Scheduled events include ’80s cover band Radio Cult, a replica of the 1960s Batmobile, costumers, artists and many other attractions.
At the Lawrenceville location at 481 W. Pike St., actor Chandler Riggs of the TV series “The Walking Dead” will be making an appearance. At the Buford location at 4264 Sudderth Road, his co-star Sonya Thompson will be signing autographs.
Puttkammer said “hundreds and hundreds” of faithful followers and newcomers attend the “holiday” each year.
While some stores limit Free Comic Book Day to one book per visitor, Galactic Quest offers as many as comic-lovers can handle.
“I let them go to town with it,” Puttkammer said. “We have just an incredible selection. It’s kind of you’re one-stop shopping here.”
