Jimmy Maurer, a St. Pius grad and Lawrenceville native, was one of four players the Atlanta Silverbacks announced the signings of Thursday to add depth as the April 9 season opener approaches.
Maurer, a goalkeeper, was the fourth overall selection in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft by the New York Red Bulls.
He played in college at South Carolina alongside Silverbacks defender Tyler Ruthven and trained with the U.S. National Team’s U-17 squad from 2004-06.
Atlanta also announced the signings of forwards Junior Sandoval and Jon Cox and defender Willie Hunt.
Sandoval, a Honduras native, is on loan from the Puerto Rico Islanders.
Cox previously played in the region for Atlanta FC — now the Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves — and Georgia Perimeter College.
Hunt was captain at Francis Marion University and received numerous conference and regional honors during his four-year college career.
