Stand By Me

MOVIE: 4 out of 4 stars

DISCS: 3 1/2 out of 4 stars

Culled from the same Stephen King novella collection as "Apt Pupil" and "The Shawshank Redemption," "Stand by Me" (adapted from "The Body") is the grittiest if not the best pre-teen coming-of-age movie from the '80s. Also among director Rob Reiner's finest efforts, it took the bold chance to allow its four leads to speak like young men actually do (hence the "R" rating) and to feature a real villain (a menacing Kiefer Sutherland) and not just a teen poser. It's a film about kids made for adults that hasn't lost its punch or impact with time.
