7 locals win area weightlifting titles

Seven Gwinnett County lifters won championships in the Area II Weightlifting Championships, held last weekend at Peachtree Ridge.

Norcross was the top local finisher in the team standings, placing second with 56 points behind first-place Tucker’s 60. Mill Creek, South Gwinnett and Dacula finished third through fifth in the event, which featured more than 400 lifters.

The top three finishers in each weight class qualified for the March 19 state meet in Hawkinsville.

South Gwinnett’s Shaquille Hall (140 pounds-and-under) and Aaron Wimberly (161-170) won championships in the lighter classes. Hall posted an 810 total (225 clean, 235 bench press, 350 squat) and Wimberly’s total was 1,000 (295 clean, 295 bench, 410 squat).

Dacula also had two area champions — Brian Johnson in 191-205 and Ajulani LaPlace in 226-245. Johnson’s total was 1,080 (275 clean, 340 bench, 465 squat) and LaPlace’s was 1,055 (240 clean, 320 bench, 495 squat).

Mill Creek’s Tyler Cierski won the 246-and-up division at 1,265 (345 clean, 315 bench, 605 squat), Norcross’ Seth Hinsley won 206-225 at 1,210 (355 clean, 350 bench, 505 squat) and Peachtree Ridge’s J.P. Yarid won 171-180 at 960 (240 clean, 315 bench, 405 squat).

Other local finishers who qualified for state with top-three finishes were: Mill Creek’s Chris Cousino and Winder-Barrow’s Dillion Barnes in 140-and-under, South’s Blake Brown in 141-150, Mill Creek’s Devonte Lewis in 151-160, Collins Hill’s William Stewart and Archer’s Jaylen Stewart in 161-170, Norcross’ Kenny Huitt and Winder-Barrow’s Kendrick Davis in 181-190, Norcross’ John McWilliams and Winder-Barrow’s Tyree Tanner in 191-205, Norcross’ Isiah Hinsley in 206-225, Winder-Barrow’s Will Douthit and Norcross’ Silverberry Mouhon in 226-245 and Norcross’ Montorious Broughton in 246-and up.
