Pasquale, Gladiators stymie Stingrays

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Edward Pasquale stopped 36 of 37 shots and the Gwinnett Gladiators picked up their fourth straight win by beating South Carolina 3-1 on Tuesday night at the North Charleston Coliseum.

This was the last meeting of the season between Gwinnett (26-25-7) and South Carolina (32-22-4).

The Gladiators went 6-9-1 against the Stingrays, but won the last three meetings.

Despite several brilliant scoring chances in the first period, both Pasquale and South Carolina netminder Shane Owen came up big.

But Danick Paquette picked up where he left off Sunday in the second.

Coming off a two-goal, one-assist performance in a win over Reading, Paquette beat Owen low glove side on a breakaway at 4:27 to give Gwinnett the 1-0 lead.

Paquette’s 13th tally of the season was assisted by John-Scott Dickson and Paul Flache.

Mike Forney, just reassigned to the team from AHL Chicago on Monday, added to the lead at 11:48. The Atlanta Thrashers’ prospect scored his 15th goal of the season while the Gladiators were shorthanded on a wrist shot from the far dot. Andy Brandt and Sam Roberts had the assists as the Gladiators took a 2-0 edge into the third period despite logging just five shots in the second.

Justin Milo pushed the lead to three against his former team, blasting a slap shot past Owen on the powerplay at 11:15.

Brandt and Flache picked up their second assists of the night on the goal.

Nikita Kashirsky’s goal with 1:26 remaining in the third broke the shutout, but it was too little too late. The loss snapped South Carolina’s four-game unbeaten streak.
