YOUTH ROUNDUP: Galaxy Gold wins President's Cup

With a lineup full of Gwinnett girls soccer players, the under-17 Galaxy Gold won the Region III President’s Cup last weekend and earned a trip to the upcoming national championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

The team, coached by Duluth grad Patrick Ahern, features 12 Gwinnett players on the roster. The Galaxy defeated a Texas team 3-2 in the Region III finals after a thrilling shootout win in the semifinals over a club from Tennessee. It earned a berth at regionals by winning the Georgia President’s Cup title.

Members of the championship team are Magaly Gutierrez, Laura Bruce, Victoria Schellinger, Alicia Velasquez, Katy Nelson, Hannah Wilson, Madelyn Youngblood, Bethany Walshe, Sarah Walls, Kristen Kelly, Kat Bonds, Kayla Wooton, Sarah Weber, Andrea Marin, Ally Brady, Sarah Geer and Hannah Toutkoushian.

Gutierrez made two diving save in the penalty-kick win in the semifinals, while Toutkoushian, Bonds, Walsh and Geer converted their PKs for the Galaxy. Brady, Valasquez and Geer each scored a goal in the championshiop game victory.

BASEBALL

Wolves repeat as county champs

The Buford Wolves Pony baseball team won the Gwinnett County Interleague Championship for the second time in a row. The tournament featured 19 teams from Gwinnett County in a 14-game regular season, followed by a season-ending tournament.

The Wolves went 21-0 on the season, including a win over Peachtree Ridge in a best-of-three championship series at Shorty Howell Park in Duluth. They trailed in Game 1 2-0 before coming back to win 11-2.

Buford clinched the title in Game 2 with a 16-8 victory for its second consecutive county title.

During the playoffs, the Wolves outscored their opponents 102-24. The title includes a 35-0 run over the last two seasons for the Wolves. On July 5, they were recognized for their efforts at Coolray Field with the Gwinnett Braves in a pre-game ceremony.

Team members are: Brendan Brown, Connor Cohea, Jake Pratt, Zach Razewski, Dalton Dale, Alex Fowler, Julian Wesson, Brandan Lee, Garrison Cole, Dylan Dailey, Preston Kell, Jared Scott and Dylan Carroll. The team is coached by Mark Cohea, Kelly Otts, Andy Pratt, Jeff Evens and Chris Fowler and Diana Evens.

Rams win county title

The Grayson Rams 12U AAA baseball team defeated Collins Hill at Dacula Park to win the GGBL county championship. The Rams went 5-0 in the tournament and finished the regular season 16-2.

Team members are Hunter Burnett, Nick Clarno, Kaleb Glasnovich, Matthew Greenway, Riley Knight, Zach Love, Austin Nash, Donald Perteet, Davis Ray, Connor Sims and Evan Sturgill.

The team is coached by Mike Knight, Billy Ray, Eddie Sims and Russell Greenway.

Lions capture Panther Invitational

The Peachtree Ridge Minor All-Stars won the Panther Invitational, going 4-0 in the tournament hosted by Mountain Park.

Team members are Chase Condra, Dominick McIntyre, Matthew Hays, Jack Dixon, Joe Lyons, Corey Farber, Truett Haswell, Ryan Donaldson, Ben Dunson, Aaron Sturdivant, Joshua Julian and Liam Jones.

The team is coached by Steve Condra, Derek Hays, Dean Farber and John Dixon.

Collins Hill wins Spartan Memorial Day Classic

The Collins Hill 12U Black Eagles travel baseball team went 5-0 to win the Spartan Memorial Day Classic in Sharon Springs on May 28-29.

The Eagles outscored their opponents 46-7, which included three shutouts. They clinched the title with a thrilling victory over the Sharon Springs Spartans. It was the team’s second tournament championship this Spring.

The Black Eagles players are: David Beasley, Jay Cloer, Chase Gonzalez, Noah Gross, Alex Guzman, Lonnie Hernandez, Griffin Maxwell, Ryan Mueller, Adam Roos, Zachary Shockley, Cameron Strope and Bryce Weed. The team is coached by Mickey Strope, Rick Maxwell and Trey Weed.

Tigers claim title

The Archer Tigers defeated the Brookwood Broncos for the 14U Greater Gwinnett Baseball League championship.

The Tigers won the best-of-three series, including the second game at Gwinnett’s Coolray Field. Archer won the title game 12-7.

Team members are: Andrew Falgiano, Dillon Drexler, Paul Duffey, Reese Ballon, Austin Stone, Matthew Stringer, Rein Jones, Tate Gentry, Chandler Hyman, Sid Turner, Connor Breedlove and Jordan Allen.

The team is coached by Chris Drexler, Lou Falgiano, Larry Stone and Chip Hyman.

SOFTBALL

Mill Creek wins all-star tourney

The 10-and-under Gold Bracket Blue Hawks All-Star Team, based out of Bogan Park, recently won the Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation’s Pre Tri-County Tournament in the all-star division.

The team defeated North Gwinnett 9-1 in the finals of the five-day tournament.

Members of the winning team are Kendall Bolmer, Emma Alexander, Kaitlyn Swanson, Nikki Hennum, Madison Coan, Sydney Smith, Jaycie Ponce, Heidi Hyatt, Natalia Herrera, Kendall Mabie, Madison Bruce and Savannah Phillips. Mill Creek is coached by Mike Coan, Pam Camp, Chad Hyatt and Tommy Bruce.

TRACK AND FIELD

Harris places at district meet

Thomas Harris, a rising ninth-grader at Collins Hill, placed first and second in his two sprint events at last weekend’s Area 6 District Championships in Augusta.

Harris won the 200-meter dash in 23.47 seconds and finished second in the 100 with a time of 11.57.
