ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A goal by Aaron King in the 87th minute gave FC Tampa Bay a 3-2 win Sunday against the Silverbacks, keeping Atlanta from getting points in consecutive games.
After a flurry of repeated saves by Lawrenceville native Jimmy Maurer in goal, King struck a powerful volley off a cross from Frankie Sanfilippo for the eventual game-winner and his first goal of the season.
Maurer had kept the score even at 2-2 in the 70th minute by saving a penalty kick after Shane Moroney was called for a foul in the box. The save also denied Mike Ambersley of a hat trick.
Ambersley struck for his first goal in the 31st minute, firing a left-footed volley past Maurer off a cross from Tsuyoshi Yoshitake.
Willie Hunt equalized the game for Atlanta (1-8-2, 5 points) three minutes later, scoring his second goal against Tampa Bay (3-4-4, 13 points) this year from a pass by Ciaran O'Brien.
Tampa Bay goalkeeper Jeff Attinella got a penalty save of his own in the 50th minute after Ciaran O'Brien was taken down in the box. Four minutes later, Ambersley put his second goal home after a diving save by Maurer to put Tampa Bay up 2-1.
Jordan Davis scored an equalizer in the 64th minute for Atlanta, blasting a shot past Attinella from 35 yards out.
