Insect expert testifies in Anthony trial

ORLANDO, Fla. — An insect expert said he found flies related to decomposition in the trunk of a car that belonged to a Florida woman accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter.

Forensic entomologist Neal Haskell testified Saturday that the evidence was consistent with a body being in the trunk of the vehicle for a short period of time and then removed. Prosecutors believe the toddler’s body was kept in the car before being left in a wooded area near Casey Anthony’s home.

Anthony has been charged with first-degree murder in her daughter’s death. If convicted she could face the death penalty.

Weiner requests leave of absence from House

WASHINGTON — Under fierce pressure from fellow Democrats to resign in a sexting scandal, Rep. Anthony Weiner announced Saturday he was entering professional treatment at an undisclosed location and requested a leave of absence from Congress.

An aide for the embattled New York lawmaker made the disclosure in a statement shortly after several Democratic party leaders demanded he quit for exchanging messages and photos ranging from sexually suggestive to explicit with several women online.

‘‘This sordid affair has become an unacceptable distraction for Representative Weiner, his family, his constituents and the House,’’ Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the party chairwoman, said in a written statement calling for the 46-year-old married lawmaker to step down.

4 found shot to death along N.C. highway

DURHAM, N.C. — Four people have been found shot to death along a highway in a North Carolina business research park, authorities said Saturday.

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office said the bodies of three women were found early Saturday in a car on N.C. Highway 54 in Research Triangle Park, while the body of a man was outside the car. Lt. Stan Harris said the shootings weren’t random, but he said he couldn’t disclose any other details.

Officers responded after receiving a call just before midnight of shots fired. Harris said that when officers arrived, the victims’ car was the only one on the road.
