WINDER — Winder’s popular Lazy Daze festival, scheduled for July 16, has city staff and local residents excited about another fun- and music-filled day in the city. This year’s theme, “The Great American Rock and Roll Revival,” promises a twist contest, an Elvis tribute artist and other acts sure to please revelers.
On Tuesday evening, city council members voted 3-2 to approve the sale of beer and wine at the festival from 5 to 9 p.m. Councilmen Sonny Morris and Bob Dixon opposed the measure.
“I think we’re sending a bad message, allowing people to walk around with alcoholic beverages. I think we’re asking for trouble, myabe not this year and maybe not the next, but it’s coming,” Dixon said.
Councilman David Maynard said that though he doesn’t drink alcohol, he does not expect the city to enforce his morals.
“I don’t think it’s our job to legislate morals,” Maynard added before the vote.
Dixon credited his opposition to the number of children that attend the festival as well as drivers leaving the festival under the influence of alcohol.
