DULUTH -- The Hudgens Center for the Arts will open four new exhibits this week.
Beginning with an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, the exhibits will be open through Sept. 3. The reception is free and open to the public, and will introduce the Hudgens' new series of similarly-themed exhibits:
* Pressing Matters: The Atlanta Printmakers Studio annual members exhibition is presented by the studio that was founded in 2005 to "foster the development of printmaking as a vibrant and progressive medium," and will feature work from Atlanta-area members.
* Book Arts Invitational Exhibition: Book art, in its simplest definition, is taking an existing book and making it into art. The Hudgens exhibit will feature the work of Brian Dettmer, Margot Ecke, Cynthia Thompson and Eileen Wallace, all established artists in the field who create their art largely by "using a book's form in a new way for a completely different purpose or function."
* Altered Book Competition: The third annual Gwinnett County Public Library Altered Book Competition will also be on display at the Hudgens during this time period, highlighting the book art of Gwinnett adults and children.
* Pulp Fashion: Gwinnett County Public Library employees will also have an internal competition of their own on display, in the form of "the novel art of the paper dress." Recycled titles and books were turned into paper dresses.
The Hudgens will also hold a free family day June 19 during normal hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
