Longtime administrators with Gwinnett County Public Schools and Buford City Schools said open house is an exciting event for educators.
"It's that anticipation," said Georgann Eaton, principal at Sweetwater Middle School in the Berkmar cluster. "You can taste it in the air. The children are excited and the teachers are anxious to meet their students."
Students of both school systems can get a sneak peek at their classrooms, and parents can get to know their children's teachers during open house this week.
"It's all about establishing that open door of communication," Eaton said.
Buford Academy Principal Joy Davis agreed.
"It's getting to know your school, getting to know your teacher, making sure you know what your bus number is ... the basics," Davis said.
From Monday through Friday, GCPS students will have the chance to learn the basics as they receive information about the new 2011-12 school year. First day of classes for GCPS is Aug. 8.
While many Gwinnett schools plan to have an open house Thursday, schools encourage parents to check individual school websites for dates and times of planned events.
For Buford City Schools, open house is scheduled from 4 to 6 pm. Tuesday. The first day of classes for Buford City students is Thursday.
"It's one of our biggest events of the year," Davis said. "I would say 95 percent of our parents and students attend open house. It is really huge."
For Barrow County Schools, open house is scheduled for 7 to 11 a.m. at elementary schools and 8 a.m. to noon at middle and high schools Thursday. The school year begins for Barrow County Schools on Aug. 8.
