400 attend funeral for victims of roller rink slaying

BARLING, Ark. -- Four siblings killed in a shooting rampage at a Texas roller rink were remembered Saturday as a part of a tight-knit family, even as the hundreds gathered in an Arkansas church to mourn them tried to make sense of the tragedy.

More than 400 people attended a service for Trini Do, 29, her sisters, Lynn Ta, 16, and Michelle Ta, 28, and her brother, Hien Ta, 21. Trini Do's estranged husband, Tan Do, 35, shot her and her siblings during a birthday party for their 11-year-old son and then killed himself.

Police in Grand Prairie, Texas, have said they believe the shooting was planned and followed years of domestic violence. Trini Do received a protective order in December against her husband, but she had it withdrawn earlier this year against a prosecutor's advice and wanted to give him another chance, an aunt has said.

The fifth victim in the shooting rampage, Thuy Nguyen, 25, was Trini Do's sister-in-law. She will be buried in Vietnam.

Tropical storm leaves parched Texas mostly dry

McALLEN, Texas -- The storm that many had hoped would bring some relief to parched areas of south Texas passed Saturday after dropping less than an inch of rain -- good news only for the cotton farmers who were ready to resume their harvest.

The National Hurricane Center said its advisory on what was once known as Tropical Storm Don would be its last as the remnants passed into northern Mexico. Don had failed to live up to even low expectations by tropical storm standards and was downgraded earlier to a tropical depression.

Bush to be in New York for 9/11 10th anniversary

NEW YORK -- The ceremony at the World Trade Center site marking the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks will be a solemn but stately event that will include former President George W. Bush and a chance for victims' families to view the names of loved ones etched into the memorial, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

President Barack Obama and Bloomberg will be joined by the leaders in charge during the 2001 attacks, including Bush, former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and former New York Gov. George Pataki. Current New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will also be there, he said.

Speaking on his weekly radio show Friday on WOR-AM, Bloomberg said the lawmakers will read short poems or quotes. No speeches will be given.

''This cannot be political,'' he said.

Police identify dead woman, make arrests

DUMMERSTON, Vt. -- The woman found dead by a passing motorist in Dummerston was shot in the head and two men have been arrested in connection with her death, Vermont State Police said Saturday.

Police identified the victim as Melissa Barratt of Bellows Falls, 31. They said one of the men arrested, 29-year-old Frank Caraballo of Brattleboro, had been searching for her regarding drug-related activity before she was killed. They said Caraballo had been seen walking with her into the woods where her body was found Friday.

Caraballo and 22-year-old Joshua Makhanda-Lopez of Springfield, Mass., have been charged with second-degree homicide, unlawful restraint. Both also face unrelated charges of selling crack-cocaine.

Jane Young of the state attorney general's office says a community member was adding a $5,000 reward.

Santa Claus fired for bawdy joke found dead at 69

SAN FRANCISCO -- A Santa Claus who appeared on Jay Leno's ''Tonight Show'' after he was fired from a downtown San Francisco Macy's store over some bawdy humor has died.

A neighbor found 69-year-old John Toomey on the floor of his residential hotel room Friday. Authorities say it appears Toomey died naturally, but the exact cause of death has not yet been determined.

Toomey lost his job at the store in December after a couple complained about a joke he made.
