Gwinnett County Public Schools officials may go back to the voters in November for an extension of the 1-cent sales tax to fund the system's ongoing capital projects.

In a special called meeting scheduled for tonight, the board could decide whether to ask Gwinnett County residents for a fourth iteration of the special purpose local option sales tax.

If approved, it's in the hands of the voters.

A spokesman with the school system said a list of capital projects included in SPLOST IV would be available today following the meeting.

Board members will also discuss an intergovernmental agreement with Buford City Schools as part of the notice of election.

In past elections, the city school system has also used SPLOST dollars to meet its capital needs.

The current tax -- SPLOST III -- went into effect July 1, 2007, and will last through June 30, 2012.

A new 1-cent sales tax would last through June 30, 2017.

In 1997, Gwinnett County voters approved funding for the first-ever education SPLOST. Revenue from the five-year penny tax was used to build classrooms, provide instructional technology and pay down existing debt from a 1993 bond referendum.
