LAWRENCEVILLE -- For the first time in 10 years, a congressional committee will hold a hearing on the FairTax.
The proposal has been a staple of Gwinnett politics for decades, first with U.S. Rep. John Linder and now with his protege and successor U.S Rep. Rob Woodall, R-Lawrenceville, the current sponsor. The bill would abolish the Internal Revenue Service and payroll and income taxes for a national sales tax.
At today's 10 a.m. hearing, House Ways and Means Committee members will hear from former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who made the FairTax part of his presidentidal campaign in 2010, Boston University economics professor Laurence J. Kotlikoff, Beacon Hill Institute Director David Tuerck and Tax Notes columnist Bruce Bartlett.
Woodall announced the hearing via a YouTube message at www.youtube.com/
