SUWANEE -- Nan Wade of Suwanee scooped herself a small bowl of vanilla ice cream, added caramel syrup and topped it off with a cherry while she chatted leisurely with her friends, both new and old.
The ladies came to meet strangers, but left with friends.
Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation hosted a senior ice cream social at the Prime Timers Pointe and the Community Recreation Center in George Pierce Park Friday.
"The purpose of this event is to give seniors the opportunity to meet new people and explore our parks," said Nazanin Weck, Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation resources and marketing coordinator in an email. "They can sit out on the patio and socialize after making their own ice cream sundaes and enjoy a nice afternoon while learning about all the activities and programs offered by Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation."
Even though only a group of five women were in attendance, the ladies had a blast chatting as if they had been close friends for years and were simply catching up over a cup of tea.
"I am so impressed with Gwinnett County and their parks and recreation and their senior centers," Wade said, adding that she wanted to attend so she could learn about the programs and get more involved.
Because of the low attendance the parks seminar didn't take place, but the ladies didn't go home disappointed because they made new friends.
"We have fun wherever we go," Wade said.
