NORFOLK, Va. — Newest offensive lynchpin Tyler Pastornicky had three hits and starter Todd Redmond did enough for his seventh win as the Gwinnett Braves opened their series in Norfolk with a 5-2 victory Friday.
It helped the G-Braves keep pace in the International League’s South Division, a half game back of first-place Durham. Singles by both Jose Constanza and Pastornicky led off the game for Gwinnett, and eventually turned into a 1-0 lead on a run-scoring double play groundout. The G-Braves and Redmond didn’t squander the lead. Redmond (7-8) went five innings, yielding just two runs and scattering four hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts. Closer Jairo Asencio was rock solid again, going scoreless in the ninth for save No. 18. Mauro Gomez led the way with a 2-for-3 night and two RBIs. Constanza was 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Pastornicky was 3-for-5 with a stolen base. Gwinnett takes on Norfolk in Game 2 of the road swing tonight at 7:15 p.m. The Braves will send out RHP Julio Teheran (10-1, 1.70) vs. RHP Steve Johnson (0-4, 6.81) for the Tides.More like this story
