Boy, 8, found dismembered

NEW YORK -- An 8-year-old Brooklyn boy who got lost while walking home alone from day camp in his Orthodox Jewish neighborhood was killed and dismembered by a stranger he had asked for directions, and his remains were found stuffed in a trash bin and the man's refrigerator, police said Wednesday.

The gruesome killing of Leiby Kletzy shocked the tight-knit Hasidic community in Borough Park, in part because it is one of the safest sections of the city and because the man under arrest is himself an Orthodox Jew.

A day-and-a-half search for the boy ended with the discovery of his severed feet inside a bloody freezer at the home of a man who was seen with the child on a surveillance video, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. The rest of the remains were in the trash in another neighborhood.

''It is every parent's worst nightmare,'' Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

The 35-year-old suspect, Levi Aron, implicated himself in the killing, Kelly said.

Police said there was no evidence the boy was sexually assaulted, but they would not otherwise shed any light on a motive except to say Aron told them he ''panicked'' when he saw photos of the missing boy on fliers that were distributed in the neighborhood. Police were looking into whether Aron had a history of mental illness.

Detectives were questioning him Wednesday afternoon and planned to charge him with murder.

Court delayed in husband attack

WESTMINSTER, Calif. -- A Southern California woman accused of cutting off her estranged husband's penis has made her first court appearance.

Forty-eight-year-old Catherine Kieu appeared Wednesday in Orange County Superior Court in Westminster, where her arraignment was postponed to July 22.

Judge Debra Carrillo scheduled a bail review hearing for that date and Kieu was held without bail in the meantime.

Garden Grove police say Kieu spiked a meal and served it to the victim shortly before the attack Monday night. Police said the man felt sick and went to lie down, then awoke tied to the bed as Kieu attacked him with a kitchen knife.

Records show the couple married in December 2009 and the victim filed for divorce in May.

Rape suspect, 74, admits fleeing

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The U.S. attorney says a 74-year-old rape suspect who went on the lam 40 years ago has been captured and has pleaded guilty in New York to fleeing prosecution.

The rape case, however, has been dismissed. The government says the victim cannot testify because of illness, and some evidence no longer exists.

The prosecution's statement says Russell Benjamin Pearce was charged in 1970 with raping a 19-year-old girl in Sullivan County. He did not show up for a 1971 court date and was not located until 2010 in Pennsylvania.

Probation in bestiality case

PHOENIX -- A former Phoenix middle-school music teacher accused of trying to arrange to have sex with dogs has been sentenced to one year of supervised probation.

The sentence was handed down Wednesday to 25-year-old Patrick Stephen Trejo, who was convicted of conspiring to have sexual contact with a dog.

Trejo and 47-year-old Keith D. Kiefer, of Mesa, Ariz., were arrested in February after they agreed to meet a dog handler at a hotel. Authorities said they used the Internet to connect with dog owners who offered their canines for sex.
