LOGANVILLE -- Traffic will shift to new asphalt on Ga. Highway 20, a big milestone for the long-awaited widening in southern Gwinnett.

Crews have built parallel lanes from Grayson to Loganville, which will eventually bear westbound traffic. For now, though, all of the drivers will move to the new lanes so crews can rebuild the older pathway.

Traffic is scheduled to shift to the lanes today, if weather permits.

"(Today), we will shift traffic onto the 'new' two lanes of State Route 20," said Randall Davis, district construction engineer for the Georgia Department of Transportation. "Traffic will be moved to this side of the median while the 'original' two lanes of State Route 20 are rebuilt."

Crews also have to close Oak Grove Road at its intersection with Ga. 20 so its can be raised five feet to meet the new grade of the road, a press release said. The intersection should be reopened in a month.

Funded by federal stimulus dollars, crews are slated to complete the $10.9 million project -- which will create a four-lane highway from Cooper/Ozora Road to Brand Road -- by the end of the year.
