BUFORD -- Interstate 85 barrier cables meant to keep vehicles on the roadway literally snagged morning commuters Tuesday.
The cable wire, part of a large section of the guard rail system that runs the interstate median near Buford, came undone and entangled several vehicles traveling northbound on I-85 about 6 a.m., police said.
All lanes were shut down for about 30 minutes. Northbound I-85 motorists were diverted to I-985.
Officers on scene believe the guard rail was damaged by a tractor-trailer that had left the scene after hitting it.
Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter said damage to the guardrail left a large section of it in the roadway that several motorists were unable to avoid.
