DACULA -- Friends and family of a Dacula father and son who died in a house fire this week have established a fund to assist surviving family.
Leslie Cash and 8-year-old son Michael died from smoke and burn injuries after fire broke out in their Crowe Road home Wednesday morning. Authorities believe the boy alerted his sleeping family to the blaze, and that his father was trying to put it out when both became trapped inside.
Neighbors and family recalled Leslie Cash, 73, as a devoted family man, retired U.S. Army veteran and a retired master wood worker with the DeKalb County Board of Education. His wife of 33 years and 6-year-old daughter escaped the home and survived with minor injuries, authorities said.
Investigators believe the fire may have originated in the home's den, where Leslie Cash's body was found, but an exact cause has not been determined.
Donations to the "Les and Michael Memorial Fund" can be made at Gwinnett Federal Credit Union branches. For more information, email bulldogs_rule24@yahoo.com or visit www.gwinnettfcu.org.
Funeral services are planned for Saturday afternoon at Lawrenceville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home, followed by burial at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery in Bethlehem.
