Aurora to kick off dance series with '50s sock hop

The Aurora Theatre and events facility 550 Trackside kick off their new "Dance Night Series" with a '50s Sock Hop on July 16.

Each dance night will feature lessons with expert Kathy Casper and the great folks from All About Ballroom, a release said.

Al Stilo, director of sales and marketing, said he has seen an increase in interest in dancing caused by television shows like "Dancing with the Stars" and "So You Think You Can Dance?" because they put a spotlight on dancing.

"(The shows are) featuring not necessarily always just professional dancers, and people are seeing that it's something they can do," Stilo said. "Folks are always looking for new and different ways to be active as well, and I think it's just one of those things that has come into vogue."

The Carwoods will provide live music from rock 'n' roll to today's popular music with their renditions of Elvis, Bill Haley and Chubby Checker.

Guests will also be able to purchase refreshments such as crepes from American Crepe, beer, wine or soft drinks.

"I think what's going to be great about this event is it's going to be a wonderful combination of all things that encompass a good dance event," Stilo said. "Number one, you've got a venue that has a great sort of atmosphere with a large dance floor and that's truly wonderful."

Stilo also said having live music as part of the evening will have a large effect on the event, but having the opportunity to learn how to dance is going to make the difference between a good night and a great night.

People of any skill level can come out to dance, whether they are looking for pointers or someone to rival them on the floor.

Stilo believes dancing is social, fun and active, so grab those dancing shoes and join the Aurora Theatre at 550 Trackside in the Lawrenceville Town Square for a fun night out.
