Public to choose charity for Rotary

DULUTH -- The Gwinnett Mosaic Rotary Club is letting the community decide which nonprofit organization will receive its sponsorship for a year.

The club has started a contest that allows the public to nominate organizations and vote to decide which one will receive the sponsorship, according to a news release.

"Improving life within the local community is a core focus of the Gwinnett Mosaic Rotary Club," said Colby Green, the club's public relations vice chair. "This year, we are excited to open the partnership opportunity to the community through a public nomination and voting process."

The award for the winning charity is an upfront $1,000 donation, along with incremental donations that are made on behalf of the weekly guest speakers featured at each club meeting, Green said. Over the course of the year, the total cash donation is $2,000.

Furthermore, the award will include the naming rights and recognition as the club's official charity for the year, Green said.

"We have always focused on the local community and realize nonprofit organizations play a pivotal role in assisting the general public in different times of needs," Club President Derek Schwerzler said. "During these difficult economic periods, we felt it was instrumental to reach out to our community so that we can achieve the greatest impact when allocating our sponsorships."

Nominations will be accepted online through July 15. To nominate an organization for the award, visit www.gwinnettmosaic.com.

The Gwinnett Mosaic Board of Directors and members will choose three finalists by July 30.

From Aug. 1 to 30, the public can return to the website to vote for the organizations once per day for the entire month.

"We're excited that the entire world could determine a major portion of our sponsorship money and our nonprofit for the year," said Tim Hur, public relations chair. "It is especially important to us since our club abides by our name and truly is a mosaic of different cultures and walks of life."

The winning charity will be announced Aug. 31.
