Flande, big 1st puts G-Braves in first

DURHAM, N.C. -- Yohan Flande turned in one of his best performances of the season, throwing six innings of one-run baseball as the Gwinnett Braves beat division rival Durham 4-1 on Saturday.

The win puts Gwinnett back in first place in the International League's South Division, a game ahead of the Bulls.

Flande (4-4) allowed five hits, struck out seven and didn't walk a batter. His ERA dipped to 4.00.

The G-Braves scored four runs in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of a Durham error. Mauro Gomez, Chris Carter, Brandon Hicks and Ruben Gotay all knocked in runs in the inning. Four the Gwinnett five hits came in the first inning.

The four runs were all Gwinnett needed with Flande and the bullpen. Juan Abre and Jaye Chapman combined for scoreless seventh and eighth. Jairo Asencio recorded his 12th save with a perfect ninth inning.

Jose Constanza singled in the fifth for the G-Braves other hit.

Durham scored its sole run in the second on a Daniel Mayora RBI double.

Gwinnett ends its road trip today at Durham before both teams come to Coolray Field for a pair of games Monday and Tuesday.
