NORCROSS — Discarded fireplace ashes caused a fire early Saturday morning on the 600 block of Omaha Drive in Norcross, officials said.
The blaze was spotted by a Gwinnett County Police Department helicopter just before 1 a.m. Saturday. Firefighters arrived to find flames coming from a two-car garage. Fire crews were able to contain the fire to the garage and the enclosed breezeway. The blaze destroyed the garage, but the main dwelling only sustained minor smoke damage, said Lt. Eric Eberly, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Fire Department. An investigation determined that the fire was caused by ashes from a wood-burning fireplace that were discarded in a trash can behind the garage.More like this story
