LAWRENCVILLE — Many of Suzanne Stevens’ cupcake creations are based on whims.
“So many of our plans are fly by the seat of our pants,” said Stevens, the owner of Sweets on the Square in downtown Lawrenceville.
That’s why she thinks she has what it takes to be on “Cupcake Wars,” a reality competition on the Food Network.
Stevens e-mailed the show’s producers Saturday to tell them about her bakery and its signature item — cupcakes. A casting producer called her on Tuesday and asked her to submit an audition video.
On Friday, a film crew was in the shop, helping Stevens make that audition video.
“I think we’re quirky ... and I think we have a fantastic cupcake,” she said.
All of her cupcakes are made from scratch and infused with old-fashioned flavors. But Stevens knew she needed more than a delicious product to set her bakery apart. So almost a year ago, Sweets started featuring square cupcakes.
“I knew when we opened, we needed a hook,” Stevens said. “One night it hit me. We are Sweets on the Square. We’re located on the Lawrenceville square. So in February, square cupcakes were born. They have been very, very popular.”
Each month, the bakery also offers new flavors. January’s selection includes tiramisu, cappuccino, coconut and — Stevens’ favorite — black forest. Customers’ favorites, including carrot cake and red velvet, are offered throughout the year.
Sweets on the Square is located at 138 E. Crogan St. in Lawrenceville.
