Authorities: Fire that destroyed Winder home intentionally set

WINDER — Officials believe a fire that destroyed a vacant Winder home Thursday was intentionally set.

A 911 caller reported the fire about 3:24 p.m. at a single-story home on Bird Hammond Drive near Atlanta Highway. Fire crews found the home fully ablaze on arrival, said Barrow County Emergency Services spokesman Lt. Scott Dakin.

No one was living in the home, and no injuries were reported. It is a total loss, Dakin said.

“There was no power or utilities or any other heat source to the structure that had been vacant for several years,” Dakin said. “This points to a human act.”

The incident is being probed by fire investigators and the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, Dakin said.

The Sheriff’s Office is conducting follow-up interviews with “people of interest,” he said.
