ATLANTA — American Red Cross officials are reporting a significant loss in donations due to this week’s inclement weather across metro Atlanta and northern Georgia.
Because of blood donation center closures, canceled blood drives and the inability of donors to attend blood drives, the Red Cross estimates about 1,600 units of blood and platelets could not be collected on Monday and Tuesday.
“Winter weather often causes delays and cancellations for schools, work and community events,” Red Cross spokeswoman April Phillips said. “But it also means cancellations of vitally important blood donation opportunities.”
The Red Cross is urging all donors to contribute as soon as weather conditions permit. There is a special need for type O and type B donors.
