I think most of us have heard of President/Dictator Hugo Chavez of Venezuela.
When the Venezuelan opposition party made big gains in Congress in their September elections, Mr. Chavez and his ruling party used the lame duck session to pass legislation to advance their socialist agenda and to cement Mr. Chavez’s power and control. How? They passed laws and regulations that restrict media criticism, control the financial sector, limit congressional debate and increase the use of executive orders. If this doesn’t sound familiar, it should. Our Congress either did or wanted to do all of these things both during and preceding our lame duck session last year. Scary? You bet! — William D.
