SPCA in Suwanee offering $10 rabies shots

SUWANEE — In the wake of a rabies alert issued last week, officials with the Georgia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals want Gwinnett pet owners to safeguard animals — and themselves.

County officials urged residents to be alert after a cat tested positive for rabies in Suwanee. The infected animal was found on Scales Road, near Buford Highway and McGinnis Ferry Road.

Georgia SPCA director Jane Stewart said rabies is almost always fatal once an animal contracts it, and can be transmitted to humans through bites from an infected animal. The agency recommends dogs and cats be vaccinated each year against rabies.

The Georgia SPCA offers $10 rabies vaccines for pets that are spayed or neutered through the agency’s program. Other veterinary services are also available, Stewart said.

More information is available on the Georgia SPCA’s website (www.GeorgiaSPCA.org) or by calling 678-765-2726. The facility is located at 1175 Buford Highway in Suwanee.

County officials ask anyone who spots strange animals to call 911 to dispatch Gwinnett County Animal Control personnel.
