Veteran Greater Atlanta Christian basketball coach Eddie Martin has four state championships and more than 600 wins on his resume, but he looked as if he had won his first game Saturday night as his team celebrated at midcourt after winning the Region 6-AA championship.
His Spartans, the defending state champs, had just handed South Atlanta its second defeat of the season 68-54 at Maynard Jackson High.
“I am about as excited as I can be,” Martin said. “To beat a team like that twice in one year is really something. It says a lot about how well our team played tonight and in this tournament.”
GAC defeated South Atlanta earlier this season but that was on the Spartans’ home court. The Hornets of South Atlanta came into the regional final with 26 wins against that one setback and had disposed of Buford the night before, 61-48.
But Spartan senior Malcolm Brogdon, who is headed to the University of Virginia, played brilliantly with 34 points. Brogdon was named the MVP of the tournament and plays with an intelligence and flair that helps GAC play with confidence and discipline.
