LAWRENCEVILLE — Gwinnett County could potentially save $1.7 million if the General Assembly passes legislation expanding the use of E-911 funds, an official told the Board of Commissioners on Tuesday.
The board adopted a resolution that supports passage of such legislation. Currently, the money collected for E-911 fees on telephone lines can be used to pay for personnel, equipment and facilities.
The ability to use leftover fees to cover other costs, such as insurance and public safety voice and data communications systems, would save money and enhance public safety.
The board also adopted three other resolutions supporting potential money-saving legislation, including:
• The repeal of a law that requires the county to publish professional service expense in the newspaper. This costs the county about $5,800 per year, and the resolution states the same information could be posted on the county’s website.
• A revision that would allow the Recorder’s Court prosecution to be staffed with a supervising attorney instead of a solicitor. This would save about $50,000.
• The establishment of a $15 technology fee that would be added to traffic citations. This money would support the technological needs of the Recorder’s Court, the Gwinnett County Police Department, Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services, and the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department.
