DULUTH — Give a pint, get a pint.
On Monday and Tuesday, that will be the deal at American Red Cross blood donation centers across metro Atlanta, including the Duluth location — give a pint of blood, and get a pint of Blue Bell ice cream.
“What better way to share the love on Valentine’s Day than by sharing the gift of life, and getting a pint of ice cream,” Red Cross spokeswoman April Phillips said.
Those who give blood at the Red Cross’ Duluth donor center, located at 3090 Premiere Parkway, on Monday or Tuesday will receive a coupon for a free pint of their favorite Blue Bell flavor. The vouchers are redeemable anywhere Blue Bell is sold.
The Duluth donor center will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days.
The extra push for blood comes in the midst of a 28,000-unit shortage nationwide, due primarily to severe weather across the country in recent months. Though it affects every state, that type of widespread shortage can hit Georgia especially hard, Phillips said.
“Georgia is actually an import region, which means we must rely on blood from other states to meet the needs of patients in local hospitals,” she said. “So a shortfall of 28,000 units can severely impact our ability to provide for these hospitals.”
