Hazmat crews respond to spill

NORCROSS — Hazardous materials spilled on Buford Highway closed the road in Norcross for more than an hour Monday afternoon, officials said.

Hazardous materials crews responded to the scene near Mitchell Road just before 4 p.m., finding six five-gallon buckets of a “concrete release agent” spilled on the roadway, Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.

The material, which fell from a flatbed truck during transport, was “considered combustible and could have been an irritant if exposed in a confined environment,” Rutledge said.

The southbound lanes of Buford Highway between Beaver Ruin Road were closed as hazmat crews used absorbent materials to clean up the liquid. All lanes were reopened at about 5:10 p.m., Rutledge said.

No injuries or evacuations were reported.
