SNELLVILLE -- Authorities from Dawson and Forsyth counties have joined the search for the body of a man believed to have drowned Saturday afternoon on Norris Lake in Snellville.
According to Lt. Eric Eberly, spokesman for Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services, the swift water team from Gwinnett County and the Dawson County Fire K-9 task force are working from a boat and on the surface to identify a spot to send divers from the Forsyth County Fire Department into the water to conduct an under water search.
Four dives to recover the man's body were unsuccessful Saturday.
Eberly said the decision has been made that due to water conditions, divers are not going into the water today unless there is a high probability of a recovery of the victim.
On Saturday, water visibility was low, and the temperature was about 40 degrees. One of the divers experienced slight hypothermia during the search, Eberly said.
Emergency Services Operations will be terminated before dark today, he said.
A 46-year-old man took a kayak out for a ride and capsized shortly after noon Saturday, said Eberly. A work crew building a boat deck told authorities the man could not swim and was not wearing a life jacket.
"Bystanders stated he was struggling to stay above and hold on to the overturned kayak before he disappeared under the water," Eberly said. "We (were) attempting to recover his body."
The identity of the man has not been released.
