GAC wins to finish 5th in Arby's Classic

Greater Atlanta Christian didn't make it to the title game, like it had done two years ago. But the Spartans still had a success run in the long-running Arby's Classic in Bristol, Tenn.

Coach Eddie Martin's team finished fifth in the 16-team tournament, defeating Urspring of Germany 67-61 as Collin Swinton scored 20 points and Delano Spencer added 18 on Saturday.

Spencer had 67 points over the four games and Swinton scored 55. Spencer had a high game of 25 points in the turney and Swinton reached 20 points twice.

GAC (9-4) lost 102-78 to hot-shooting Mentor, Ohio in the second round after a 73-63 opening-round victory over Gate City, Va. But the Spartans, ranked No. 5 in the Class AA state coaches poll, bounced back for a 57-48 victory over Cherokee, Tenn. to reach the fifth-place game.

GAC, the two-time defending AA state champ, won its first three games in the 2009 Arby's Classic before losing to Memphis Melrose 55-51 in the championship game.

Cole Hobbs scored 12 points against the German team Saturday, and Andrew Lewis added 10 points and nine rebounds. Spencer had five assists and five steals, while Swinton contributed four assists and three steals. The Spartans committed just nine turnovers.

Mill Creek loses first game

The McDonald's Classic at Tift County wasn't very hospitable to Gwinnett boys teams riding winning streaks.

Mill Creek, which had won its first 11 games, lost for the first time Thursday, falling to unranked Class AA Dublin 59-50. The Hawks, ranked No. 4 in Class AAAAA, had slipped by Region 1-AAAAA teams Lowndes 52-50 and host Tift 47-44 in the first two days of the round-robin event.

Fellow Region 7-AAAAA member North Gwinnett, coming off a championship in its Jared Cook Holiday Classic, pushed its winning streak to six after a 0-4 start with an opening 70-61 victory over Lanier County in Tifton. But then the Bulldogs fell to Class A Wilcox County 64-51 and Tift 51-48. Tift is ranked No. 6 in AAAAA and Wilcox No. 9 in Class A.

Parkview girls only unbeaten left

The Parkview girls are the only remaining unbeaten team in Gwinnett County as the Panthers head into 2012 off a championship in the Upward Classic at Dorman, S.C.

Parkview (13-0) handed host Dorman its first loss in the title game on Friday, winning 59-44. Tournament MVP Erika Joseph had 13 points and 10 rebounds, while all-tourney pick Marissa Mandeldove had nine assists.

The Panthers, heavy favorites to win Region 8-AAAAA, are ranked No. 3 in Class AAAAA behind unbeaten McEachern and two-time defending state champion Norcross.

In addition to the Mill Creek boys, the Shiloh boys and Wesleyan girls also lost for the first time during the Christmas vacation break.

Peachtree Ridge falls in title game

The Peachtree Ridge boys lost to Lake Wales in the championship game of the Great Florida Shootout at Kissimmee, Fla., on Thursday.

Lake Wales, ranked No. 37 nationally by MaxPreps, improved to 9-2 with the 69-52 victory as four players scored in double figures.

Peachtree Ridge (5-6) had three players score at least 10 points, led by Amir Warnock's 12. But the Lions made just 8 of 17 free throws.

Peachtree Ridge is still playing without leading scorer Jordan Capps, who suffered a high ankle sprain during a game Dec. 9.
