Lawrenceville to host Flashlight 5K race

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Organizers of an annual 5K race are asking volunteers to light the way to benefit a local food bank.

Registration for the sixth annual Flashlight 5K, which raises money for the Lawrenceville Cooperative Ministry, is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church on W. Crogan St.

Runners need only bring their racing attire, while volunteers are asked to tote a flashlight with fresh batteries to light up the event which starts at 5 p.m.

Race-day registration is $25. There is no charge to volunteer.

Linda Freund, director of Lawrenceville Cooperative Ministry, said more than 200 people have already signed up to race and volunteer at the event.

A T-shirt and pizza dinner is included with the registration fee. Winners will receive top-three trophies in several categories.

"It's a great time," Freund said. "It's very family friendly, and there's nothing like it anywhere that we know of."

According to its website, the Lawrenceville Cooperative Ministry is a non-profit organization that aims to "assist those in need by providing food, limited emergency financial assistance for utilities and prescription drugs. We also offer assistance by connecting those in need with various helping sources in the community. We seek to help clients identify ways to achieve self-sufficiency."
