This second film adaptation (the first was in 1947) more resembles the movie version of the Who's "Quadrophenia" than the 1938 Graham Greene novel. Changing the setting to the mid 60s, writer and rookie director Rowan Joffe still retains the barely-cloaked Roman Catholic metaphors while infusing maybe a few too many mob cliches all within an ominous film noir framework. Sam Riley ("Control") stars as Pinkie, a hit-man who begins to woo a naive waitress (Andrea Riseborough) who might have witnessed him whacking a rival hood. The sturdy supporting performances from John Hurt, Andy Serkis and Helen Mirren as the waitress' boss-turned sleuth are all top-notch.
