NORCROSS -- A former cashier at a Norcross Target store was arrested last week after police say she bilked her employer out of thousands of dollars worth of gift cards.
According to a Gwinnett County police report, 25-year-old Takevia Nashaun Turner was working at the store on Holcomb Bridge Road when -- over about three weeks and on seven different occasions -- she rang up high-dollar gift cards for her boyfriend and a cousin, accepting little or no cash in return.
In all, investigators believe Turner swindled the store out of more than $12,000.
Police began looking into the matter after several registers came up short, and were led to Turner via surveillance video.
Turner allegedly told police the scheme began innocently.
"It first was an accident," she said. "My boyfriend came into the store to buy a $100 gift card, but I (typed) in an extra zero making it $1,000 ... I found out when I got home and I just didn't do anything."
Turner told police she kept doing it because she "needed the money." Jail records show she was booked Dec. 22 and charged with seven counts of theft by taking. She has since been released on $9,100 bond.
