ATLANTA (AP) -- Atlanta police say a pedestrian was killed and a police officer was injured when they were struck by separate vehicles on the Downtown Connector.
Reports say that the incident unfolded around 7:30 p.m. Friday on southbound Interstate 7 5 south of University Avenue. Police say a 27-year-old officer was responding to a call about a pedestrian on the interstate. The pedestrian fought with the officer, ran across the Connector's northbound lanes, jumped over the median and was struck by a vehicle in the southbound lanes. The pedestrian died at the scene.
Police say the officer was trying to stop traffic and provide aid in the southbound lanes when he was struck by another vehicle. He was taken to Gray Memorial Hospital with head and leg injuries. Five lanes of traffic were closed until around 10:15 p.m.
