Escape attempt out of police car causes Snellville scene

SNELLVILLE -- Edwin Flores watched with awe as a swarm of police officers descended into Snellville's main intersection, subduing a man in handcuffs.

"I don't know what's going on," he said, describing a chaotic spectacle he watched unfold from the emissions station where he works.

The scene, where cops from Snellville's and Gwinnett's police force converged, reportedly began at a domestic violence call at a house several miles away.

A man arrested in the incident was on his way to the county jail, when he tried to escape from a police cruiser, Gwinnett Police Cpl. Ed Ritter said.

"The suspect went ballistic in the back seat," Ritter said in an email, adding that the man was able to kick out the rear window of the patrol car and attempted to escape. "Several officers responded to assist with the attempted escape and the suspect was subsequently Tased by an officer."

Snellville Police Chief Roy Whitehead said the city force loaned the county its transport van to get the man to jail.
