PHOENIX -- One day after losing by 31 points, the Buford girls made a last-second stop to beat St. John's College (Washington, D.C.) 64-63 in the Nike Tournament of Champions on Wednesday. St. John's has been ranked fifth all season by ESPN, while Buford is ranked No. 12.
The Wolves (6-2) jumped out to a nine-point lead at the half, but saw it evaporate early in the third quarter before pushing the lead back up to five with less than two minutes to go in the game.
Emily Adams and Maya Dillard each hit clutch free throws in the final minute to give Buford the one-point lead. St. John's had the ball with 16 seconds left, but missed the final shot.
Kaela Davis had 25 points to lead the Wolves. MacKenzie Darrah added 12 points, while Kristina Nelson finished with 10 points.
Buford faces No. 7 St. Mary's Academy of Stockton, Calif., today at noon.
Bolingbrook (Ill.) 58, Wesleyan 43
PHOENIX -- Wesleyan went head-to-head with USA Today's No. 1-ranked team, Bolingbrook from Illinois, and hung close until the fourth quarter.
The Wolves (8-2) fell 58-43 on Wednesday at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, primarily because of a differential at the free-throw line.
Wesleyan was 13 of 21 from the line, while Bolingbrook was 26 of 34.
"They were much more physical," Wesleyan head coach Jan Azar said. "I'd like to see us play a little tougher tomorrow. Our goal is to not back down."
Connecticut signee Morgan Tuck led Bolingbrook with 20 points -- 12 from the free-throw line.
Holli Wilkins scored 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Wolves and Brittany Stevens added nine points.
Wesleyan plays today at 1:30 p.m. against the loser of Wednesday's late game between Irving (Texas)-MacArthur and Incarnate Word of St. Louis.
Fayette County 56, GAC 45
MYRTLE BEACH -- The Greater Atlanta Christian girls finished 1-2 in the Crescent Bank Holiday Invitational, losing to Fayette County 56-45 on Wednesday in a consolation-bracket semifinal game despite 14 points from Sydni Means.
Fayette County (7-3) used a 13-3 run to take a 30-22 lead over GAC (6-4) at intermission and then scored the first six points of the second half to go up by 14 points.
Fayette County was led by Shaquella Nunn's 15 points and 13 rebounds. Means had four assists and four steals to go with her 14 points for GAC.
Brianna Cummings and Sierra Lawrence each scored eight points for the Spartans.
Mill Creek 45, Marietta 38
HOSCHTON -- Jasmine Carter just missed a double-double, but still led Mill Creek to a 45-38 win over Marietta on Wednesday.
Carter finished with 14 points and nine rebounds for the Hawks (6-3), while Nadya Miller also scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds. India Dillard added 10 rebounds and five points.
Mercer Island 60, Providence 44
SUWANEE -- Despite 19 points from Kareem Adekunle, Providence Christian lost 60-44 Wednesday to Mercer Island (Wash.) in a consolation-bracket game at the Jared Cook Holiday Classic at North Gwinnett.
Charlie Scott also had 14 points for the Stars (4-5). Mercer Island was led by its 6-foot-7 posts Joe Rasmussen (14 points) and Brian Miller (13 points).
Mill Creek 53, Marietta 49
HOSCHTON -- Jalen Bracey scored 13 points as the fourth-ranked Hawks moved to 9-0 and ended the Blue Devils' (7-3) seven-game winning streak with a four-point win at home on Wednesday.
Paul Evans and Daniel Loudermilk each added 12 points, with the latter also pulling down eight rebounds. Trayvon Shaw also contributed a strong floor game that included four assists and four steals.
GAC takes 2nd in Elbert Co. Duals
ELBERTON -- Greater Atlanta Christian rolled through its first four opponents, but lost in the finals to the host of the Elbert County Duals on Wednesday.
The Spartans (26-4) beat White County 54-16, George Walton Academy 66-13, Athens Christian 63-12 and Madison County 60-19 to reach the finals, but Elbert County took care of GAC 41-27 to win its own tournament.
Carter Clinebell (120 pounds) and Zach Feuerbach (160) each went 5-0 in the dual meet with five pins. Will Hemby (145) also went 5-0 with three pins.
