PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Buford did not fare well facing back-to-back national champions Mater Dei from Santa Ana, Calif., in the first round of Nike's Tournament of Champions.
In Buford's 60-47 loss to the ESPN-ranked No. 10 team in the nation led by UCLA-bound Nirra Fields who led all scorers with 27. Buford entered the game ranked No. 12 and playing without Andraya Carter, out with a lingering knee injury.
Kaela Davis made up for her missing teammate, leading the Wolves with 25 points. Davis and Fields were the only two players in double figures. Buford did contain USC-bound Jordan Adams to just six points.
Buford scored the first five points of the game, but after that Mater Dei found its offense helped by a turnover-prone Buford team.
The Monarchs hit eight of their 10 3-pointers in the first half, Fields leading the way with five and Buford fell behind by 11, 30-19 at halftime. The Wolves cut the deficit to seven with three minutes to go, but couldn't get any closer with Mater Dei hitting its free throws in the final minutes.
