GAB: Hotel honors breakfast attendant

BUFORD -- Hotel Equities recently honored Margie Smith with the firm's Lighthouse Award. Now retired, Smith worked for several years as the breakfast attendant at the SpringHill Suites by the Marriott Buford, managed at that time by Hotel Equities.

Hotel Equities Chaplain Greg Smith and Matt Crall, general manager of the Courtyard by Marriott Buford, presented the award to Smith.

The award includes a check for $1,000 that the recipient may donate to a charity of her choice. Smith donated $500 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in honor of her granddaughter, and she gave $500 to the American Cancer Society.

"Miss Margie touched the lives of many hotel guests with her caring spirit and gentle kindness," Crall said. "She welcomed everyone with a warm, friendly smile."

The award honors outstanding service to others and is presented "in recognition of making a difference in the lives of other people by demonstrating a sacrificial and exemplary spirit and by being a shining example to all who embrace the Biblical mandate of being salt and light in a world of darkness."

DULUTH -- The Rotary Club of Duluth plans to hold the third annual Players' Party featuring Texas Hold 'em, Bingo and a silent auction from 6 to 10 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Gwinnett Place Marriott on 1775 Pleasant Hill Road.

Rotarians, friends, family and members of the community are invited to attend.

Proceeds from the event will cover the cost of sending 20 to 25 children of Rainbow Village to summer day camp at Bunten Road Park in Duluth.

Rainbow Village, a nonprofit organization, is a one- to two-year transitional program for homeless families with children in Duluth. Offering temporary housing along with mandatory support services, the program aims to instill self-sufficiency as a means to build strong, intact families.

Reservations are required for the Players' Party event. Confirmations are due by Jan. 14. Tickets are $40 per person and include entry to the event, heavy hors d'ouvres and a choice of starting chips to play Texas Hold 'em or cards to play Bingo.
