Buford honors outgoing board member

BUFORD -- Officials with Buford City Schools honored longtime board member Leon Johnson for his 10 years of service during Friday's regular meeting.

The school board thanked Johnson for his time with the district and wished him well in his future endeavors. He said he appreciated his "time with the system, and I have enjoyed working with all of you."

During the November election, Johnson lost his school board post by a narrow margin to political newcomer Beth Lancaster.

Other business at Friday's regular meeting included the board's approval of several business items including $11,000 for paving, patching and resurfacing at Buford Elementary school.

The board also voted unanimously to approve the following:

-- $294,000 for a new electronic scoreboard for the field. Chairman Phillip Beard said it will be a joint funding venture for the school board and the booster club.

-- $37,000 to paint the media center, cafeteria and a classroom at Buford Elementary School.

-- $10,000 for new stage drapes and renovations at the Buford High School auditorium.

$37,000 to paint 3 rooms? That much money would paint a lot of houses.
