NORCROSS -- Gwinnett police have arrested a Stone Mountain man they believe orchestrated the October robbery and subsequent killing of a Norcross convenience store manager.
Mark Harper, 44, is charged with robbery in the Oct. 2 death of Rajib Sarkar, 37.
According to an arrest warrant, Harper provided a gun and information about Sarkar to another Stone Mountain resident, 21-year-old James Grady Clark, who detectives believe fired the fatal shots when the robbery went bad.
Police believe the plan was to stick-up Sarkar for his night deposit, which he routinely carried home from the Chevron Welcome Pantry in Norcross. Warrants indicate Clark shot the victim about 1 a.m. in the breezeway of his apartment complex and made off with between $5,000 and $10,000.
Officers responded to the apartments to find Sarkar shot multiple times. He was transported to a hospital but died shortly thereafter.
Clark is charged with armed robbery and felony murder.
Sarkar, who was married, had emigrated from India in 2001 and previously worked near Carrollton, according to an online memorial. Smith said certain aspects of the investigation are still being worked.
Investigators believe the incident was isolated.
"These suspects haven't been tied to other cases in which Indian victims were targeted," Smith said.
Harper is scheduled to appear at a probable cause hearing Dec. 21, followed by Clark a week later.
