DULUTH -- Gwinnett Medical Center recently honored a local physician for his contributions to its sports medicine committee, a "key community program" based out of the hospital's Duluth campus.

Dr. T. Scott Maughon was the chairman of the sports medicine committee for six years. Comprised of orthopedic and sports medicine physicians and hospital leaders, the committee provides services and improved access to care and is responsible for the overall direction of GMC's sports medicine program.

It also develops related policies and helps provide public education opportunities.

Under Maughon's leadership, the program was expanded to include coverage by certified athletic trainers at the majority of Gwinnett County high schools and three schools in Johns Creek. He also forged collaborations with numerous other organizations, including the Gwinnett Football League.

"Dr. Maughon's unique vision of sports medicine and operations helped GMC-Duluth establish a standard of care to serve a range of athletes in the community," GMC-Duluth president Lea Bay said. "He helped lay a foundation regarding the original committee design and program that led us to achieve a number of successes and will help us continue to meet future demands."

Dr. Gary Levengood will serve as the new chairman of the sports medicine committee.
