NORCROSS -- Gwinnett police have in custody the man they believe fatally shot a Norcross convenience store manager in a calculated robbery ploy at the victim's apartment two months ago.
Investigators arrested James Grady Clark, 21, of Stone Mountain on felony murder and armed robbery charges on Monday.
Police believe Clark gunned down Rajib Sarkar, 37, about 1 a.m. Oct. 2 in a breezeway of the Paces Crossing Apartments near Norcross, where Sarkar lived.
Warrants indicate Clark made off with between $5,000 and $10,000 stolen from the victim. Sarkar managed the Chevron Welcome Pantry in Norcross, and that money was his night deposit, Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said.
Investigators believe Clark was privy to the victim's money-handling habits and targeted him specifically for the cash, Smith said.
"Things go bad, and (Clark) killed him," Smith said.
Officers responded to the apartments to find Sarkar shot multiple times. He was transported to a hospital but died shortly thereafter.
Sarkar, who was married, had emigrated from India in 2001 and previously worked near Carrollton, according to an online memorial.
Smith said the investigation is continuing this week. Clark is scheduled to appear at a probable cause hearing Dec. 28.
